Canon EF-S 18-135 mm Lens – A Review

The Canon EF-S 18-135mm lens is a wide telephoto shooter zoom lens and has the capability to produce an angle or  view range like the full framed 35 mm camera. It is an innovative move in the world of SLR zoom lenses.Canon EF-S 18-135mm

It covers a landscape of 18 mm wide end and shoots quality pictures of sports and wildlife when zoomed out up to  135mm. It has a maximum magnification level of 1/5 life size by zoom, while in the closest focus length it covers an  area of 3 x 4.5”.

Introduced in October 2009 by Canon, the EF-S 18-135mm lens uses a conventional DC motor in place of a USM  motor. So, the focus needs to be adjusted and set as manual.  It can be easily used in the EOS crop sensor DSLRs of  Canon. But it will not fit in any Full frame camera or APS-H series camera.

The manual focus has to be adjusted by a ring available in front of the lens. But while manual focus is also possible,  the auto focus feature is mostly preferred as the mode of operation. It doesn’t have any DOF scales.

Lens hood  and case for Canon EF-S 18-135mm lens are available in the market, though no lens hood or case are  generally supplied when buy the lens. Again there are various 3rd party products on lens hoods and cases are also  available in the market at half the price compared to the original process.

The Canon EF-S 18-135mm lens is definitely a decent lens for your SLR. Its zoom range of the 18-135 is equivalent to the 28-216  mm full frame cameras and covers almost all requirements of an average photographer.

The Canon EF-S 15-85mm lens is one of the more promising lenses released for Canon APS-C Digital SLRs with f/3.5-5.6 Ultra Sonic Motor (USM) IS. It offers a 35mm equivalency of 24 -135mm when you use this lens with a Canon APS-C EOS Digital SLR. The main features of The Canon EF-S 15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 USM IS lens are the wide focal range, lightweight and compact design, optical image stabilization, Ultra Sonic Motor and the optimization for Canon APS-C sensor cameras.

The Canon EF-S 15-85mm lens is a very easy to carry lens because it is just under 4” in length and it weighs about 1.25 lbs.  So you can carry this lens wherever you go. Canon EF 75-300mm Lens Review

The Canon EF 75-300mm comes with a lens that features a filter size of 58mm, ranging in at less than 3" in width, and less than 5" in length. The lens is very small and light weight compared to other Telephoto lenses of its kind, and is one of Canon's least expensive made lenses. But in saying that, it's great to see Canon haven't put quality aside. Though the lens is made of plastic, it's extremely durable. I've owned mine now for about 2 years, and haven't had any problems or issues, the lens still takes great quality pictures.

One major feature that is missing from the lens is the image stablization. To get that feature, you would have to go up $500 to get a similar size lens with that feature. The Canon EF 75-300mm lens does feature a nice auto-focus system which is fast and steady, though I do recommend using a tripod, because it's hard to steady a 300mm long lens. Since the lens only features an F-Stop of 4, the lens doesn't take great pictures in low light conditions. However, if you're using the Canon EF 75-300mm to take pictures outside, to take nature photography for example, the Canon EF 75-300mm does an amazing job.

There are similar models made by Sigma and Tamron, and I did take this into consideration before making my purchase. However, I've always found I get better quality from the Canon name. That's not to say that is with every lens, but I definitely recommend going with the Canon brand.

All in all, the Canon EF 75-300mm is something I really recommend purchasing. If you're in the market for a small, light weight, compact Telephoto Zoom Lens, this is the right choice for you. It's inexpensive and easy to carry around. It features a wide array of focal lengths, and the overall quality of the lens is outstanding.

I give the Canon EF 75-300mm a solid 10/10 rating due to its affordable price and sharp optics.

Canon EF 28-105mm

Canon EF 28-105mm f/3.5-4.5 II USM vs. Canon EF 28-105mm f/4.0-5.6 USM

There are two Canon EF 28-105mm models. The Canon EF 28-105mm f/3.5-4.5 II USM was released in 2000. Two years later the  lower quality model with a 4.0-5.6 f was also released. The zoom range is just great, perfect for weddings or events. In fact, a lens with this zoom range is all you need for that. The question is which of the two is better?

The 3.5-4.5 has a 58 mm filter size and weighs 13.2 ounces (375 g). Its 15 elements aranged in 12 group have made it well known for the sharp images it produces. Add to that the fast focus which comes in very handy. Some cons would be the noticeable vignetting in full frame corners at wide open aperture. If you change the focal ratio only one stop vignetting remains at f/5.6.

Unfortunately the lens was discontinued and you can only buy a used one. Amazon has a used lens priced for $248.50 but if you're lucky enough you might find a good one for less than 200$ although for that it has to be bought straight from the seller. The image quality is not that of a pro lens, but  the quality is good enough for what you pay.

The f/4.5-5.6 model was as well discontinued. Still, a new lens is priced at $320 by a seller on Amazon. This lens is of cheap built-in quality and is  soft at all focal lengths with the aperture wide open.  It has 10 elements in 9 groups that come with slight pincushion distortion by 105 mm. The filter size is as well 58 mm and weighs 7.4 ounces (210 g), almost half compared to the f/3.5-4.5.

I definitely do not recomand the f/4.5-5.6 because it is greatly over-priced for the quality it offers. Between the two presented I would choose the older but cheaper f/3.5-4.5. Were you to choose a similar range lens, you can buy the Canon EF 24-135 f/3.5-5.6 IS USM that is not discontinued and has a retail price of 479.99$ or the also discontinued EF 24-85 mm f/3.5-4.5 USM priced around the small price of 150$ or cheaper.

Canon EF-S 17-85mm

One of the best in this lens series of EF-S lenses is the Canon EF-S 17-85mm. This has been arguably the best lens in the EF-S series. The key design feature is aimed at matching the APS-C Imaging Sensor to that of the image circle. This objective can be achieved by reducing the distance between the focal plane and the rear of the lens, thus decreasing the image circle size.

This has resulted in getting a more cost efficient and reduced weight wide angle lens, thus ensuring a superior image quality, better resolution and contrast over a wide range of focal lengths. These lenses do provide great image quality for an affordable and versatile package.
